Good Evening Community:
1. Of course I look familiar. I was here just last week cleaning your carpets, painting your shutters, or delivering your new refrigerator. 2. Hey, thanks for letting me use the bathroom when I was working in your yard last week. While I was in there, I unlatched the back window to make my return a little easier. 3. Love those flowers. That tells me you have taste. And taste means there are nice things inside. Those yard toys your kids leave out always make me wonder what type of gaming system they have. 4. Yes, I really do look for newspapers piled up on the driveway. And I might leave a pizza flyer in your front door to see how long it takes you to remove it. 5. If it snows while you're out of town, get a neighbor to create car and foot tracks into the house. Virgin drifts in the driveway are a dead giveaway. 6. If decorative glass is part of your front entrance, don't let your alarm company install the control pad where I can see if it's set. That makes it too easy. 7. A good security company alarms the window over the sink. And the windows on the second floor, which often access the master bedroom-and your jewelry. It's not a bad idea to put motion detectors up there too. 8. It's raining, you're fumbling with your umbrella, and you forget to lock your door-understandable. But understand this: I don't take a day off because of bad weather. 9. I always knock first. If you answer, I'll ask for directions somewhere or offer to clean your gutters. (Don't take me up on it.) 10. Do you really think I won't look in your sock drawer? I always check dresser drawers, the bedside table, and the medicine cabinet. 11. Here's a helpful hint: I almost never go into kids' rooms. 12. You're right: I won't have enough time to break into that safe where you keep your valuables. But if it's not bolted down, I'll take it with me. 13. A loud TV or radio can be a better deterrent than the best alarm system. If you're reluctant to leave your TV on while you're out of town, you can buy a $35 device that works on a timer and simulates the flickering glow of a real television. (Find it at faketv.Com .) 1. Sometimes, I carry a clipboard. Sometimes, I dress like a lawn guy and carry a rake. I do my best to never, ever look like a crook. 2. The two things I hate most: loud dogs and nosy neighbors. 3. I'll break a window to get in, even if it makes a little noise. If your neighbor hears one loud sound, he'll stop what he's doing and wait to hear it again. If he doesn't hear it again, he'll just go back to what he was doing. It's human nature. 4. I'm not complaining, but why would you pay all that money for a fancy alarm system and leave your house without setting it? 5. I love looking in your windows. I'm looking for signs that you're home, and for flat screen TVs or gaming systems I'd like. I'll drive or walk through your neighborhood at night, before you close the blinds, just to pick my targets. 6. Avoid announcing your vacation on your Facebook page. It's easier than you think to look up your address. 7. To you, leaving that window open just a crack during the day is a way to let in a little fresh air. To me, it's an invitation. 8.. If you don't answer when I knock, I try the door. Occasionally, I hit the jackpot and walk right inThings a Burglar Won't Tell You

Now THAT'S Commitment!

The two-fold mission of the Community Services component of the MOCRS is to rebuild citizen trust in government by ensuring citizens have a voice in setting city and community priorities; and to deliver high quality services in every neighborhood through multi-agency collaboration.
The Outreach and Services Specialist (OSS) works with residents to identify and prioritize problem areas in a given ward. In order to make a problem area clean, safe, and sustainable for residents, it is important that the community be involved in improving the area. The OSS then coordinates with Core Team agencies to develop "workplans" that set specific tasks, goals, and timelines for each agency to tackle the neighborhood issues.
Problem areas are classified as “Crime Reduction Hot Spots” or as “Persistent Problem Areas” (PPA). Through Mayor Fenty’s “Operation Fix It” program, the Mayor’s Office of Community Relations and Services works hands-on with other agencies to bring remedy to such problem areas.
Operation Fix It
365 Days of Constituent-Focused Problem Solving
“Operation Fix It” is Mayor Adrian M. Fenty’s multi-agency initiative aimed at abating areas where crime, blight, and compliance issues require participation from more than one DC Government agency. “Fix Its” are coordinated weekly by the Outreach and Services Specialists and cover a 2-3 block radius with services including graffiti removal, street cleaning, alley repair, weed trimming, illegal dumping, abandoned auto removal, building inspection and much more. "Operation Fix-It" aims to improve the quality of life for residents, businesses and patrons.
To schedule a Fix-It, please contact your Ward's Outreach and Sevices Specialist.

"A very quick recap of the meeting last night (Wed, Apr 22) regarding the Benning Rd station development for those who were unable to attend:
Last night at Kenilworth-Parkside Recreation Center, the Community Coalition meeting with DC Office of Property Management Director Robin-Eve Jasper was overall successful. Residents of the community came out in significant numbers to voice their concerns regarding the decision of the DC Office of Property Management (DCOPM) in not moving CFSA in a building that will be built at the site. Having CFSA in Ward 7 would have possibly generated a huge amount of revenue not only for the District, but primarily for Ward 7. Mrs. Jasper indicated that the main reason why CFSA will not be moving to Ward 7 was that the District located assets (locations) already owned/leased that would accommodate CFSA without signing a new lease at a new location. The decision was driven by cutting over-head and the current National economic climate. It would make no sense for the District to relocate the agency to a new site with a new lease if they already have space at a
location that will suffice.
CM Alexander was present and echoed the concerns and frustrations of the residents. She urged the Director to look into other DC agencies that will have their lease up in the next few years to see the possibility of those agencies relocating to Ward 7. Mrs. Jasper indicated she will provide the information and look toward providing updates on the Benning Rd station development to the ANCs (mainly 7C and 7D) and they will provide the updates to the residents via list serves and public meetings.
Next steps: Greg Rhett indicated the next steps will be outlined in another community meeting that will be happening soon. Information on the time, date and location of that meeting will be forthcoming.
Again, this is just a short update of the meeting. I will post any other information I get regarding this concern as I get it."

ANC COMMISSIONERS

Mayor Adrian Fenty attended the Eastland Gardens Civic Association meeting in October 2008 - his second visit since he took office in 2007. He addressed a standing-room only crowd of residents and government employees on his goals for 2009 and how Eastland Gardens fits into the District's strategic plan. Residents asked questions, offered accolades and voiced concerns as the Department of Public Works, Parks and Recreation, Metropolitan Police and local developers were in attendance. ANC Commissioner and Ward Councilor Sharita Slayton and Yvette Alexander were also in attendance.
"We are now committed and energized," said Mayor Fenty. "We are ready to move forward!"
Other areas of community concern included class size at local Kenilworth Elementary School, the SmartBike program and abandoned vehicles in the neighborhood.
The mayor's efforts were applauded for the Department of Transportation's implementation of more than a dozen new speed humps, newly painted crosswalks and traffic signs on Anacostia Ave. NE.
The Eastland Gar
dens Civic Association thanks Mayor Fenty for his continued dedication!
